Hardhat Days

my re-education in Seattle’s shipyard

Sandblaster at work.

The following is a selection from Chapter  1.

I scaled the superstructure and tower, hand over hand, in a harness and full sandblasting gear. The morning had continued to warm, and it felt ten degrees hotter inside the heavy black rubber sandblaster’s hood I was wearing. Even with the air line blowing full blast in my face, sweat rolled down the back of my head and neck as I climbed. The two-by-four-inch plate-glass window on the face of my hood fogged up, creating gauzy tunnel vision. After ascending to the crow’s nest and crawling through the trapdoor, I pulled myself onto the metal deck, panting. I haven’t even started blasting and I’m already winded. The air stream whistled past my face as it cleared the plate glass, and I swiveled my head around to take in the view. Jesus, I’m up high.

Five Backpacks

A Family backpacking adventure around the world

The following is a selection from Chapter  1.

“How long do you think we might be stuck here?” I ask Ann while gazing out over the Patagonia. Leaning forward, I can feel sweat running down my back.

Ann doesn’t answer, but shields her eyes with both hands and looks out over the unforgiving terrain. “Hmmm,” is all she says.

The three kids in the backseat remain silent.
